ELECTROLESS NICKEL (EN)

Electroless nickel (EN) plating is an autocatalytic process which deposits a layer of nickel on a substrate. The electroless nickel process produces a nickel phosphorus alloy coating. The phosphorus content can range from 2% to 13% based on requirements and specifications. The higher the phosphorus content, the better the abrasion and corrosion resistant values. EN can be applied to most metals, and the finished coating mirrors stainless steel or bright chrome based on the surface finish prior to plating.

This process offers distinct advantages when plating irregular shaped parts, internal surfaces, holes or threaded components. With proper agitation, the EN solution covers the surface evenly in thickness. Coatings of 0.0005 or heavier generally exhibit a hardness of 45-52 Rc and can be heat treated to achieve 65-70 Rc for more wear properties. Typical plating thickness ranges from 0.0001 to 0.002. For applications needing increased lubricity, a Teflon resin can also be applied. ENís benefits include wear resistance, conductivity, solderability, chemical resistance, and an attractive finish.

We also provide hydrogen embrittlement stress relief baking. All steel parts having a hardness of Rockwell C40 (180,000 PSI) and higher must be baked at 375 degrees F, plus or minus 25 degrees F, for 3 hours minimum after plating.
